Awesome Dog Mocap

Mocap FAQ

Quick answers about our motion capture packs. Can't find what you need? Email contact@awesomedog.com.

What files come in each pack?

Every pack includes FBX (60fps source) and Unreal Engine asset pack (UE mannequin). 43 of our 51 packs also include a Unity version, and for the rest, Unity imports the FBX files directly. Each pack page lists exactly what's included.

Where do I find the FBX files?

On Fab, the FBX files are a separate download from the Unreal Engine version. Open the pack on Fab or in your Fab library and choose the FBX format to download them. The Unity version, where a pack has one, downloads the same way.

Which skeleton and frame rate are they on?

The Unreal Engine version is on the classic Unreal mannequin skeleton (the UE4 mannequin) at 30 fps, ready to play in Unreal. The FBX source files are at 60 fps on our own android character, and you can retarget them to your characters in most 3D tools and game engines.

Will the animations work in Blender, Maya or MotionBuilder?

Yes. The FBX source files open in most 3D tools that import FBX, including Blender, Maya and MotionBuilder. To use them on your own character you'll retarget them to its rig, using your tool's retargeting features.

How do I use them in Unreal Engine?

Each pack includes an Unreal Engine asset pack set up for the UE mannequin, so you can add it to your project and start using the animations straight away, or retarget them to your own characters with Unreal's retargeting tools.

Which versions of Unreal Engine are supported?

Each pack's Fab page lists the Unreal Engine versions it supports. For any other version, you can import the FBX files instead.

Are the animations looped?

Yes. Every clip is cleaned and looped, so it can play continuously, which is ideal for dance floors, crowds and idle loops.

Who performs the motion?

Professional dancers and actors, recorded in our own optical motion capture studio.

Can I try before I buy?

Yes. The free Dance Sample Pack has 22 animations in the same formats as the paid packs, so you can test them in your pipeline first.

Where do I buy, and how do downloads and refunds work?

All packs are sold on Fab. Fab handles checkout, VAT, downloads and refunds, and your purchases stay in your Fab library.

Are your packs on any other stores?

Some are. You'll find Unity versions on the Unity Asset Store and iClone versions on Reallusion's marketplace. Packs bought there come with that store's own licence, not Fab's, and their prices are different, so please check their terms before you buy. See Licensing.

Do you have sales?

Now and then we take part in Fab's sales. We post them in our news, so that's the place to look.

Which licence do I need?

Fab sells each pack under one licence with two tiers. Choose Personal if you've had no more than US$100,000 of revenue or funding in the last 12 months, or Professional if you've had more. Both give the same rights, including commercial use, and a company's licence covers everyone working on its projects. Fab sets these terms and can change them, so please check its current licence before you buy. Licensing explains it all in more detail. If you buy on another store, that store's licence applies instead.

Can I use the animations to train AI?

Not under a Fab licence: our listings are marked "Allows usage with AI: No", so they can't be used in datasets for generative AI, to develop it or to train it. But we're happy to license our motion data for AI training and datasets directly: email contact@awesomedog.com.

Do you sell in Second Life or IMVU?

Yes, as Abranimations®. See Virtual Worlds for our Second Life and IMVU stores. Please don't upload animations bought on Fab to Second Life, IMVU or similar worlds: Fab's licence doesn't allow it.

I've found your animations for sale somewhere else. Should I tell you?

Yes please. Our own stores are Fab, the Unity Asset Store, Reallusion's marketplace, our old shop at awesomedog.co.uk and, in Second Life and IMVU, Abranimations®. If you see our animations sold by anyone else, on their own or inside someone else's pack, email contact@awesomedog.com so we can deal with it.

Can you capture custom animations for my project?

Not at the moment. Custom capture takes a lot of studio time, and we're putting ours into new packs and our games. But we'd love to hear your ideas: if enough people ask for the same kind of moves, they could become a pack. Email contact@awesomedog.com.

I've bought a pack. Where can I get help?

If you're stuck, email contact@awesomedog.com and we'll do our best to help. And if you like a pack, a review on Fab really helps us.
